Matata residents say a payout for their damaged homes is too little, too late.

Homeowners of flood-damaged properties near the Awatarariki River have been offered a market-value payout, 14 years after the event.

Awatarariki Residents spokesperson Rick Whalley told Heather du Plessis-Allan he wants the council to keep its original promise.

"This is where we live, this is where the grandkids come, this is where everything happens. They said they would fix it, so they should fix it."

He says the delay reveals the Council's true priorities.

"We believe that the council are going for risk avoidance rather than risk reduction. There are things that they can do to reduce the risk, they don't want to spend any more money.

"It's not about the lives, it's about the cost."
