Rawiri Waititi: What Māori want from the new Labour government

The Māori Party's Rawiri Waititi has spoken on how he feels being a one man band in Parliament.

Waititi looks set to claim Waiariki, with a 415 vote advantage over Labour incumbent Tamati Coffey, subject to special votes.

He told Heather du Plessis-Allan he's not alone.

"I never stand on my own, I stand with the many who stand in front of me, behind me and beside me."

He may not be alone, with a possibility of him working with the Labour Party. Whether that happens or not, Waititi says that he will be holding Labour to account - and expects to see Kelvin Davis as the deputy Prime Minister.

Waititi says that the party is currently going through a process on him becoming the deputy leader of his party, as he is the only one to have a seat.

There is no word yet on if Labour will offer him a seat at the table. However, one expert says there is a silver lining to Waititi's new position in Parliament, regardless of what he personally benefits from.

New Zealand Māori Council executive director Matthew Tukaki says regardless of whether Labour comes knocking, the Maori Party gets resources it hasn't had in the past three years to continue its rebuild.

He says if this Government doesn't perform then Māori will move back to the Māori Party.
