Iconic TV actor, writer, comedian and political satirist David McPhail has died.

He was 76 and died peacefully in his sleep last night.

McPhail is probably best remembered for his work with Jon Gadsby on shows such as McPhail and Gadsby and A Week of It, where he impersonated political figures such as Rob Muldoon, Winston Peters and Jim Anderton

Pinky Agnew, who played then-Prime Minister Jenny Shipley on McPhail and Gadsby, told Heather du Plessis-Allan that McPhail was an amazing writer - and never had any issue with letting her take the lead as the Prime Minister.

"He didn't let his ego get in the way of it. There they were playing minor party leaders, and there was me playing Jenny."
