Phil Goff: Another 'early, hard' lockdown after Covid resurgence may be necessary

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has no problem of letting the city go back into a tough lockdown if it means beating Covid-19.

Auckland has been put back into level 3 lockdown, while the rest of the country is in level 2, after four confirmed community transmission cases of Covid-19.

Four probable cases of Covid-19 are connected to the family that's tested positive in South Auckland.

One expert has now warned that there could be dozens of cases in the community.

Goff told Heather du Plessis-Allan that a lockdown longer than the current three days would hurt the economy, but it would be the better long term.

"What we did originally was we locked down properly. I think we're going to have do the same.

"Otherwise you're going to get the worst of both worlds. You get the risk of the disease and the multiple deaths, and you get the risk that you're going to do the economic damage anyway."

He says that the Council has been hit by a loss of income and to be hit with that again would be tough - but there is no silver bullet to getting on top of this.

"The way we got on top of it last time, we worked together, we worked as a team, we followed the rules, and we got a great result, and I think we're going to have to do that again."

Goff also told anyone who had escaped Auckland to their holiday homes, they should do their best to stick to their bubbles.
