An Auckland local board member wants to tackle cars parking on footpaths.

There is concern that more and more people are trying to avoid paying for parking on the road, and instead park on berms in the inner city suburbs in Auckland.

It's in breach of a local bylaw, but under the Land Transport Act, it is only enforceable if there are signs saying that you can't park on the berm.

There are currently only 33 streets in Auckland where people can be ticketed if they park on the berm.

Albert Eden local board chair Peter Haynes wants to change that. He told Larry Williams that it can't be fixed on a local level.

"Auckland Council and Auckland Transport have been trying to get the Ministry of Transport to get this in their work program."

Even if that happened, it would take some years before change was noticeable.

Haynes says that another issue is that city planners are building fewer car parks in order to get more people into public transport."

"On one point of view, you could say it's a transitional thing."

Haynes has submitted on the amendments, and is hoping for change.
