Rumours that Sky may branch out into broadband

There's speculation that Sky TV may look to branch out, and get into the broadband market.

Sky's being challenged by Spark when it comes to sports coverage, and market analysts are saying Sky would be a serious contender in the internet provider market.

Tech commentator Paul Brislen says it wouldn't be hard to do.

But he told Mike Yardley Sky would need to ensure they bring something to the table in a crowding market for it to work.

"The network is pretty much the same right across the board. The speeds are the same, the costs are about the same, so you really need something different to stand out. They have one of the things that people are looking for, which is really good content."

Brislen says that it is not a huge-margin business, which is one reason Sky may not enter into the market.

However, the market is very easy to break into these days, as opposed to when Spark (formerly Telecom) dominated everything.

"Legend has it that Sky did have a look way back in the early 2000s to see if they could have a go and decided against it. But the world has changed a lot since then, it's not just telco's that can do it."
