Victoria has recorded 73 new infections overnight and tragically it's the highest-ever death toll, with 41 lives lost.

It is the highest number of deaths in a single day in Victoria with the previous record of 25 deaths recorded on August 17.

The death toll for the state now stands at 565 after it reached the grim milestone of 500 deaths on Saturday.

Despite 11 confirmed deaths yesterday, the Victorian health department said Monday's deaths included 22 people who died in the weeks leading up to August 27 and were only reported to DHHS by aged-care facilities on Sunday.

Premier Daniel Andrews is expected to be grilled for extra detail on the additional reported deaths when he fronts the media at 11am.

On Sunday the state recorded 114 new cases, including 74 mystery cases.

Politicians have reacted to the huge jump in deaths, with State Greens MP Ellen Sandell describing the rise as "devastating".

Victoria's parliament is expected to vote on the premier's controversial bill to extend Victoria's state of emergency by another 12 months this week.

There are growing calls for mandatory mask use on public transport in Sydney after a scare involving two infected bus passengers on a popular route.

There have been 10 new cases of coronavirus diagnosed in New South Wales up to 8pm on Sunday night, four of which are community transmitted.

However, federal Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth said it was unlikely health authorities in NSW and Queensland would make masks mandatory in the immediate future.

He told the Today show he doubted the logistical trouble of having an enforcement mechanism was worth the benefit.

"You have to get to the point where it's actually going to make a substantial difference to transmission," he said. "And that's probably not at the level that NSW has had at the moment."

Investigators are scrambling to track down passengers on the X39 Sydney Buses service that left Pitt St opposite Australia Square in the CBD at 6.08pm and arrived at Clovelly and Carrington Rds at Randwick at 6.40pm on Thursday, August 20 after two commuters later tested positive.
