Victoria cases drop but records deadliest day on record

Victoria has recorded 322 new cases in the past 24 hours and 19 deaths - marking the state's highest single-day death toll so far.

Yesterday was the state’s second-worst day for deaths with 17 more fatalities across the state and 394 new cases. The previous highest daily death toll was 15 fatalities on August 5.

The good news from today’s figures is that Victoria is seeing a gradual drop in new cases, as 322 cases mark state’s lowest single-day tally in 12 days.

An additional 105 new “mystery” community transmission cases, where the source of infection is not known, have been added to state’s tally.

Premier Daniel Andrews said that figure presents authorities with a “big challenge”. There have now been 2863 cases that contact tracers have been unable to link to other known cases.

He warned Victoria would have “zero chance” of containing the outbreak if limits on movements were not enforced.

Mr Andrews also warned about reading too much into today’s figures, saying it was too early to see the effects of stage four lockdown restrictions which started last Sunday night.
