An obligation to keep guests safe is a reason moteliers are calling to know when sex offenders are housed with them.
It comes after an offender sexually assaulted one of a Nelson motel owner's family members, when he was placed there after leaving jail.
The owner knew the man was an ex-prisoner, but was not told about the nature of the crimes or risk of reoffending.
Hospitality NZ's Nigel Humphries told Larry Williams it's not a selfish move when moteliers want to know those details.
"We've got a lot of obligations under health anf safety regarding guests and the environment. It's about the bigger picture."
Humphries says he hopes Corrections can be more upfront about where they place people with serious convictions.
"Communication is what it comes down to and since hese incidents took place, the communication lines have been open a lot more and there are procedures."
