There are mounting concerns about Victoria’s coronavirus outbreak after a major spike in cases and a growing rate of positive test results.

Victoria recorded 270 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, including 242 cases which were shared by an unknown source.

There are 28 Victorians in intensive care, including 21 needing ventilators to breathe.

In total, there are 1803 active cases in Victoria.

Chief medical officer Professor Brett Sutton warned Victorians will die.

“That’s a really significant number of people with coronavirus and it does mean that in the next fortnight, we’re going to see a number of people who will require hospital,” Prof Sutton said.

“There’s often 10 per cent to 20 per cent of all coronavirus infections who require hospitalisation, so that’s a couple of hundred individuals at least.

“They will require hospitalisation in the next couple of weeks.”

Victoria’s hotel quarantine cluster is not the only outbreak being monitored by authorities. There are 147 cases linked to Al-Taqwa College in Truganina, 28 cases linked to Menarock Aged Care home in Essendon, 14 cases linked to Somerville Village Meats and 14 cased linked to Brunswick Private Hospital.

The hotel quarantine blunder, first reported in late June, led to claims that some security guards were sleeping with guests in their care and that they had as little as five minutes’ training before being assigned to cover guests.

Meanwhile in NSW, There are now 28 cases of COVID-19 linked to a southwestern Sydney hotel after 10 more people were diagnosed since yesterday, and there are fears case numbers will continue to grow.

NSW recorded 13 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, chief medical officer Dr Kerry Chant revealed.

Of the new cases, two were in hotel quarantine and a third was linked to a returned overseas traveller. They have been self-isolating.

Dr Chant said the other 10 cases were associated with the Crossroads Hotel and all live in Sydney’s southwest. Three of the cases involved people who physically attended the venue, and the remaining seven are close contacts.

“Clearly this is showing that there has been a number of cases linked to the Crossroads Hotel on July 3,” Dr Chant said.

“Should you have been at that premise and not recorded your details at that time, we urge you to come forward and get tested and please isolate yourself for 14 days.

“Even if you have a negative test, please remain in isolation for 14 days, since you left that hotel.”

Dr Chant said anyone who attended the hotel between July 3 and 10 should come forward for testing.

Queensland will close its borders from midday on Tuesday to residents of 77 Sydney suburbs after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk declared them coronavirus hot spots.

Residents of the Liverpool and Campbelltown local government areas will be barred from freely crossing the border, along with all of Victoria.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman told NCA NewsWire anyone who had been in those areas and was not a Queensland resident would be turned around at the border, while residents would be forced to quarantine in a hotel at their own expense for two weeks.
