More people are choosing to ditch their home cooked meal and instead dine out or grab a takeaway.

Spending on dining out in New Zealand is increasing at record levels.

Sales in the hospitality industry have expanded by 4.2 percent in the year to March.

New Zealand Restaurant Association President Mike Egan told Heather du Plessis-Allan dining out is popular because kiwis enjoy socialising with friends and family.

"For a small outlay of money you can go somewhere nice to eat and someone does the dishes and cleans up after you and you just walk out and go home. Everyone works ultra busy lives so I think its the convenience factor that is a part of it as well."
