Megan Woods: 'A good balance' in quarantine charges regime

The New Zealand Government revealed charges that will apply to travellers coming back into the country, needing to go into quarantine.

Travellers will pay $3100 per room and $950 for each extra adult and $475 per child. But there will be mechanisms to allow charges to be waived in full or in part, the Government says.

The charges apply to people who leave New Zealand after the legislation comes into effect, or those who are visiting New Zealand temporarily.

The decision has left the coalition Government divided, with Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters wanting all returning travellers to pay the charges.

Cabinet Minister Megan Woods told Heather du Plessis-Allan they needed to look at the legalities and

"There is the right of New Zealanders to return home.

"There's intentional law about rendering people stateless."

Minister Woods says they need to make sure they are starting a regime that will make it impossible for those to return to their country of origin.
