With Meghan and Harry deciding to quit the royal family, some outspoken MPs across the Tasman say Australia should do the same.
The push for an Australian republic has largely stalled in recent years, but now, there's a new call to cut the cord.
Australian Labour MP Matt Thistlethwaite is one of those behind this, and told Andrew Dickens that it is a time for the country to have a new discussion about the country's future.Â
“We tried this 20 years ago, unfortunately it failed, but we think the timings right for the discussion to begin."Â
He says that The Queen is a great world leader, and that the relationship with the royal family won't change as a result of this.Â
Thistlethwaite says that this is not to disrespect The Queen, it is an issue that has been around for some time.
"Many Australians are posing the question, if members of the royal family can cut those ties, why can't we as a nation have a mature discussion about that and about our future."Â
