One of New Zealand's greatest ever rowers has hung up the oars for good.

Mahe Drysdale has announced his retirement from elite rowing at the age of 42.

He puts a cap on an illustrious career that includes two Olympic golds and one bronze.

Drysdale made a late push to secure his spot at Tokyo for a possible fifth Olympic Games, but was beaten by Tauranga's Jordan Parry for the single seat.

He says his decision to retire comes down to how this year eventuated.

"I knew what it would take to get to the Olympics. I didn't ultimately give the selectors a reason to select me over Jordan [Parry], I've enjoyed it, and it was time to walk away."

Drysdale says thanks to the people and the lessons he's learned, he has fond memories to look back on.

"I'm very fortunate that I've done something that I absolutely love. I don't think many people get the opportunity for 20 odd years to enjoy every single day of what they do." 

Drysdale was also a five-time world champion, securing his first gold in 2005.
