Criminologist at Victoria University Doctor Liam Martin joins Heather du Plessis-Allan to talk about a major survey into crime committed in New Zealand.

The survey's revealed that three in four cases don't get reported to police.

Eight thousand people were interviewed about crime they'd experience in that last 12 months.

The survey also found that women and Maori were at a higher risk of experiencing family violence.

While 90 per cent of family violence victims were aware of support organisations only one n five contact them.

Doctor Martin says they are aware most people do not report crime, and it's evident in specific cases.

He says areas such as sexual violence, domestic or family violence and people with prior negative experiences with the justice system are connected with under-reported crime.
