Simon Bridges: NZ like a banana republic under Labour

National's leader says Clare Curran hasn't been naive - she's been misleading.

Radio New Zealand's Head of News Carol Hirschfeld has resigned after being caught out lying that a meeting with Broadcasting Minister Clare Curran was coincidental.

Curran says she didn't realise the strict guidelines around the minister meeting with RNZ managers.

But Simon Bridges says he thinks there's more to the story.

"I think it's hard to believe a word she says when she's clearly covered this up from the start. It's taken a parliamentary program, anonymous tip offs, and even now I think we are only starting to get at the truth."

He says that for the last few weeks New Zealand has seemed like a banana republic.

Bridges says the Labour-led government has been dogged by scandal, accusations of cover-ups, and bullying.

He says we're seeing a pattern of the Prime Minister being in a position of see no evil, hear no evil.

"Either her party, her Ministers need to stop protecting her, or she needs to show some leadership and be asking the right questions."

He says to be in the position once is bad luck, but two or three times is just reckless.
