Drive-through medical clinics are set to pop-up around the country with the first opening in just over a month.

Dr Lance O'Sullivan, founder of the Moko Foundation, says 200 clinics will be open by 2021.

He told Heather du Plessis-Allan the idea, which would be a world-first, came to him just the other week.

"3'o'clock in the morning one Sunday morning, I decided I wanted to do it."

He says it'll help with wait times in communities with higher health needs.

"People make appointments to see doctors and they wait a week to see you, they wait an hour in the waiting room, we do a test and three minutes later we come in and say 'it's all good, you can go'."

O'Sullivan says the private clinics will help communities with high health needs.

'How can we do something different where convenience, the quality of care and cost of service can all be radically addressed."

The first clinics will open in Rotorua in September this year, and in Kaitaia in November.
