Sky News reporter: Flight ban not surprising from 'ultra-cautious' Australia

Australia has put a 72-hour ban on quarantine free travel from New Zealand because of the Northland community case.

Some suggest that's over the top and Jacinda Ardern has called it disappointing.

Sky News chief political reporter Kieran Gilbert told Heather du Plessis-Allan his Government is taking a careful approach.

"It's very much in line with what we've seen at a state level - ultra-cautious responses with minimal cases."

Gilbert says that the state governments likely would have done this on their own if the federal government did not.

The move from Australia follows news that they have granted non-emergency provisional approval for the Pfizer vaccine, for rollout late in February.

It has bought 10 million doses, and plans to eventually make its own.

Gilbert says that the Australian government was in consultation with their New Zealand counterparts all the way through about their plans.

"The view from the Morrison government is that they have not blindsided the New Zealand-Ardern government."
