As Oranga Tamariki faces a future under new leadership, the Children's Minister says partnership with Maori is essential.

CEO Grainne Moss has stood down.

Sir Wira Gardiner will be acting chief executive from March.

Minister Kelvin Davis told Healther Du Plessis-Allan power and resources need to be shifted to Maori.

And he wants Oranga Tamariki to be more regionally-focused, as needs differ around the country.

Davis couldn't say whether the outgoing CEO had received a pay out.

He says it's not something he asked about, as it's not important to him - and it's a matter for the State Services Commissioner.

Davis says his role is making sure Oranga Tamariki meets the needs of families and children.
