Superhero sceptics might want to avoid the movies this weekend.

Avengers: Endgame has arrived in cinemas, and sessions are selling out as fans flock to catch the final instalment in Marvel's 11-year-long franchise.

Some US cinemas will be open 72 hours straight in order to meet the demand.

It's an emotional time for fans and stars, who have been part of this world since Iron Man debuted in 2008.

"I don't know about you, but I cried like six times," star Chris Evans said standing alongside dozens of his Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars like Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson and Robert Downey Jr. after the first public screening of the film.

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth chimed in too: "I cried more than six times, Chris."

Local comic book store worker Jordan Blaikie told Heather du Plessis-Allan that its because superheroes have a universal appeal that speaks to our human instincts.

He says that superheroes tell a lot about the time in which they were created, as well as reflecting our wishes and desires.
