James Shaw denies wealth tax is a bottom line for negotiations

The Green Party is insisting it doesn't have a bottom line in Coalition negotiations with the Labour Party.

One of the Green's election policies includes a plan to make Kiwis with a net worth greater than $1 million pay one percent of their wealth to the Government as a tax.

At yesterday's MYOB small business panel discussion, Green MP Julie Anne Genter told the group the wealth tax policy was a bottom line condition.

But today, Shaw says Genter's comment was said in the heat of the moment.

He says it's been a long election campaign, people are getting tired, and she was pressed on the point.

Shaw told Heather du Plessis-Allan people sometimes 'overstate' things.

"The Green Party goes into each election saying we have a set of priorities. It depends on how many members of Parliament we have."

However, pushed by du Plessis-Allan that this is a bottom line and they don't want to admit it, Shaw says "that's rubbish".

"We're trying to get wins on a number of different areas," he says, noting climate change and getting more people in warm housing as their policies.

What policies they push on depends on where they align with Labour and how the public has voted, Shaw says.

"Over the last three years, we have demonstrated we are a good partner in Government with the Labour Party, and we're looking forward to another three years of that."
