Auckland's cancelled Round the Bays is going virtual next Friday ... as "Around the Backyard".
Because of Level Three restrictions, participants can instead do an 8.4km walk, jog or run across three days from 6am next Friday wherever they are, using a smartphone to track progress.
Event director Henry McLernon told Heather du Plessis-Allan it means everyone can still get involved.
"I think the cool thing about the event is we've got live leaderboards and GPS tracking, so people can run along and track their friends or teammates."Â
He says the event is not confined to the backyard, people just need to abide by Level 2 restrictions.Â
Anyone who signed up for the live event and who doesn't want to participate in the virtual event can opt out and get a 50 percent refund, McLernon says.Â
