E-bikes are the newest crime fighting tool for police.
Selected officers are taking part in a trial in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
Acting National Manager for Road Policing Inspector Gini Welch says biking is becoming a more common way of getting around - and it's an easy way to get through traffic.
She told Heather du Plessis-Allan this could give officers a better look into their communities.
"People are choosing different modes of transports. We've got scooters, skateboards, we've got bicycles, so it's an opportunity for us to change ours way."Â
It's also an environmentally friendly option and gives police increased visibility in their communities, she says.
Welch says after the four week trial, a formal evaluation will be completed.
