Managed isolation in a luxury lodge could be possible under a National Government.
The party wants to bring private accommodation into the government-controlled network - boosting capacity to let in more workers, and eventually students and long-stay tourists.
Deputy leader Gerry Brownlee is assuring voters National would learn from Victoria - where problems in private managed isolation sparked a COVID-19 resurgence.
"I think it is the right thing to do. We're facing endless costs in the system we've got at the moment. It's appropriate that it was put in place right now, but it's not it's something that can last forever."
He says the Border Protection Agency National would set up would establish robust criteria for providers to become part of a Government-controlled network.
"All managed isolation facilities would need to meet or exceed required levels of safety, security, reporting, training and testing."
