Gareth Morgan wants Government to focus on healthcare, not business

Grant Robertson has spent tens of billions of dollars to save businesses during this Covid-19 crisis so far, yet the lockdown has brought big business to its knees.

That includes the likes of Air New Zealand, Fletcher, and multiple media companies.

Yet there's one person who doesn't think the government should help out at all with wage subsidies.

Economist Gareth Morgan reckons the government should focus on health investment, and let the market decide what happens to business.

He told Heather du Plessis-Allanthe role of the market is to pick off the weak.

"To think that a bunch of career politicians can thwart that process by trying to hold up the unsalvagable is just a ridiculous waste of taxpayer money."

Morgan says that are wasting resources by assuming the market will stay the same, as the business environment will be totally different in the post-Covid-19 world.

"Its an extremely high-risk gamble where governments just waste an enormous amount of resources."
