The Cook Islands are still hopeful of a travel bubble, as Auckland International Airport plans a safe zone at its terminal.

The airport's making plans to protect customers in anticipation of a Cook Islands travel bubble.

Cook Islands Private Sector Taskforce chairperson Fletcher Melvin says the Cooks are ready and waiting.

But he told Heather du Plessis-Allan nothing looks likely to happen until at least after the election.

"It's a pity, as all indication is that all New Zealanders are supportive of this happening."

Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown has previously told Newstalk ZB that the country would need a travel bubble by September - otherwise the island nation risks running out of money.
