Kiwi investing in China reacts to Five Eyes statement

New Zealand’s decision to join its five eyes partners in a joint statement that's highly critical of china's actions in Hong Kong has raised some eyebrows.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta has only be in the job for a couple of weeks, and the move is a shift away from New Zealand’s more diplomatic approach with China.

In the statement, the Five Eyes partners criticise China for a "concerted campaign to silence all critical voices" in Hong Kong and then they call on China to "live up to its international commitments" and "re-consider their actions".

David Mahon, a Kiwi who's been working in private equity investing in China for almost three decades, told Heather du Plessis-Allan questions what the motive is for New Zealand to make this statement.

"The issue is we are unique as an OECD country as having our own independent foreign policy perspective" on Hong Kong, Mahon says.
