Investigations into a 2010 NZ SAS raid in Afghanistan has opened in Wellington today.
Details about Operation Burnham came to light in Nicky Hager's book Hit & Run book, which claimed the SAS committed war crimes, killing six civilians and wounding 15 others.
But the Defence Force claims the book has more than 100 factual errors.
The inquiry was set up in April when Attorney General David Parker said it was necessary so the public to have confidence in the Defence Force.
Herald investigative journalist David Fisher told Larry Williams the first days of hearings centre around whether information should be released or kept secret.
