A new report has shown that Donald Trump has so far spent more on Facebook advertising than any of his Democratic rivals for President.

The New York Times has reported that President Trump has spent US$5 million on Facebook advertising since the start of this year.

That was originally more than all of the Democratic candidates put together. However, they are now following a similar method, with former Vice-President Joe Biden having spent more than US$1 million on ads since joining the race last month.

That has seen him outspend Trump’s campaign for three of the past four weeks.

Analysis by Bully Pulpit has shown that Trump’s spending has targeted older Americans, including woman 55 and older.

US correspondent Dan Mitchinson told Heather du Plessis-Allan that it helps Trump reach a different audience than what he can get from print, radio or TV.

"It can help him reach a different audience, and he could use pictures or videos or just post a statement. I think we're going to see more of these coming months."

He says that Biden is targeting millennials, despite controversy over his actions, and the advertising spend will be beneficial to attracting that crowd.
