Agriculture Minister explains reasoning behind live export ban

The Government is stopping controversial exports of live cattle, despite almost certain disapproval from China.

Banning export shipments will be transitioned over two years.

Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor says officials have spoken Australia and China, and they're waiting for a response.

He says we've got a mature relationship with China and they will understand our position to uphold our animal welfare reputation.

O'Connor says some farmers are opposed and others don't like cattle going on ships.

Last year a ship leaving Napier sunk with 42 crew and 6000 cattle dying.

O'Connor told Heather du Plessis-Allan our reputation is too closely related to putting animals on second-cycle ships which are 30-years-old.

He says the animals will stay in New Zealand and there won't be a hit to GDP.
