A New Zealander in a Bali prison has written to the Prime Minister appealing for help amid fears he will die in there from Covid-19.

Antony de Malmanche is in Kerobokan Prison for drug trafficking after being sentenced in 2015. The former Whanganui man is serving a 15-year sentence after being caught with 1.7kg of methamphetamine in his backpack when he arrived in the country in 2014.

His lawyer Craig Tuck told Heather du Plessis-Allan the prison overcrowded, light on resources if you do get unwell, and de Malmanche has some pretty significant health issues.

"Ultimately, it's going to take a diplomatic solution and here's hoping that Jacinda [Ardern] will intervene and there can be a solution government to government."

He says that it is difficult to get accurate numbers from Indonesia, but Covid-19 is present in the jail.
