There are concerns over proposals to hike border processing levies.

It's currently just over $20 but a Ministry for Primary Industries document reveals a range of options up for consideration.

One is an eye watering jump to $160 that would apply on departure. 

Tourism Industry Aotearoa boss Chris Roberts says that would hobble the economy and we should maintain the status quo.

"The reality is the Government is just going to have to keep funding customs, biosecurity and those other border services for some time yet."
