The Crown could prosecute Google over breaking name suppression laws, but it would be a last option.

Justice Minister Andrew Little and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern have had talks with the global company.

Google says it has no plans to make changes, despite repeatedly naming the man accused of killing Grace Millane - whose name is meant to remain a secret.

Barrister Chris Patterson told Heather du Plessis-Allan there are a number of jurisdictional issues.

"Of course, a Crown Solicitor could commence contempt proceedings and they could get audits, but those orders may be be very difficult if not impossible."

Justice Minister Andrew Little has likened Google's response to flipping the bird to New Zealand while the Prime Minister says she is open to a conversation about making compliance easier across international jurisdictions.
