Immigration New Zealand will work on all the recommendations from a report prompted by the Karel Sroubek case.
Minister Iain Lees-Galloway granted the convicted drug smuggler residency, then changed his mind after more information came to light.
MBIE Chief Executive Carolyn Tremain told Heather du Plessis-Allan the review found their processes are broadly working, but steps could be taken to stop it happening again.
"That includes giving the department limited inquiry powers to check its information is correct, as well as flagging complex cases that the Minister should be asking for more advice on."
