There's hope new legislation will give freedom camping a better name. 

Strict new rules, including a system to certify self-contained vehicles and 1000 dollar fine for campers who bend the rules will be introduced.  

The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association has welcomed the changes.  

Chief executive Bruce Lochore told Heather Du Plessis-Allan a few people in the past have spoilt it for everyone. 

“Most people do it well, it’s the ones who don’t and there’s enough of them. We’ve seen enough stories of it that something had to be done.”
