Customs staff scanned more than 800 shipping containers before they found bags of cocaine in with boxes of bananas.
They had been tipped off by Australian authorities before nabbing the 190 kilogram haul in cargo on a ship from Panama.
Customs Investigations Manager Bruce Berry told Larry Williams the drugs were wrapped by the kilo, and stashed in five duffel bags.
"They only had about a day and a half to screen the 800 containers, as they can't grind the economy to a halt."
