Residents in Horowhenua may be the only New Zealanders to face a rates decrease this year.

The district council's adopted a revised annual plan with a 1.83 percent decrease in rates.

The decrease comes after consultation with locals, and have taken into account the financial and economic hardship caused by Covid-19.

Mayor Bernie Wanden told Heather du Plessis-Allan that they have reduced our employing costs by about $1.85 million, and have decreased operational spending by over $400,000.

They also haven't had to cut any major projects.

"All it's done really is push things out by six to 12 months."

He says that they had more submissions than normal, and most people wanted to have lower rates.

However, Chief Financial Officer Doug Law says although the Council is collecting less money, individual rates still depend on property value - meaning that some rates could rise when new values come into effect.
