Barry Soper: Nick Smith named and suspended from Parliament

Long-time National MP Nick Smith has caused unparalleled disruption in the House - for the second time in 13 years.

National's longest serving MP has been "named" by the Speaker and thrown out of the debating chamber for grossly disorderly conduct today.

Smith was asked to leave after clashing with Speaker Trevor Mallard, and then personally criticised Mallard, which prompted the "naming", and a Parliament vote to suspend him.

He was named after he challenged Police Minister Stuart Nash over what he claimed the Minister had said on drug driving

Smith said Nash had told Karen Dow, who's son was killed at Appleby on New Years Eve in 2017 by a driver high on meth and cannabis, and himself last year that Cabinet had approved a discussion document on the introduction of testing for drugged driving and it would be released in the new year.

Nash denied that was the case.

Smith is out for 24 hours, in his first suspension in this Parliament.
