Northland iwi on Police's new checkpoints

A Northland Iwi says it's been left in the dark on plans for the region's Covid-19 border.  

Police have confirmed they will maintain checkpoints for cars crossing into Northland, after Auckland's border opens on December 15.  

Travellers will need to ensure they have a Covid Pass or proof of a negative test result if they want to get through.  

Police say they are working closely with Iwi around these plans - and have made this decision with Iwi support.  

But Ngati Whatua Chief Operations Officer Antony Thompson told Heather du Plessis-Allan they don't know what the plans are. 

He said their main interactions are with Waitemata and Northland Policing Districts at an operation level.  

Thompson said at a higher level, they've only ever had one conversation and it was short lived
