Residents in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert are up in arms over the council's plans to remove nearly 350 exotic trees.

It's part of the Tupuna Maunga Authority's programme to restore native vegetation and wildlife habitat.

Local resident Anna Radford told Heather du Plessis-Allan people would support a gradual removal and replacement process over up to 20 years.

Radford says it will take decades for the new native trees to grow to a decent height.

"It should be a staggered approach, because it will take decades for the new native trees to mature. We want a process which is a win-win for everyone."
