There are calls to tighten up laws around electoral donations.

The Electoral Commission says it's seeking information from Winston Peters' party after allegations the New Zealand First Foundation is being used to hide donations.

Electoral law expert Andrew Geddis told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's time to step back and ask if the whole regime is working.

"If the New Zealand First Foundation and the way they are practising is within the law, as Winston Peters says it is, then to me that shows that our law is not fit for purpose."

New Zealand First has yet to hand those documents over, with Peters saying that will take considerable time - and they have a day job to do.
