Amy Adams says her change of heart on retiring from politics has nothing to do with National's change of leadership.

She ended her 12-year run in the Selwyn seat ahead of the election.

But now, she's accepted the COVID-19 Recovery portfolio from new Opposition leader Todd Muller.

Adams says she's always been very loyal to former leader Simon Bridges - and this move is about the very different world we’re now living in.

She told Andrew Dickens the portfolio is about making sure all parts of the recovery machine are pulling in a consistent direction.

She says while the recovery is about getting our economy strong, getting New Zealanders in jobs and getting small business going - there's more to it.
