US president Donald Trump is cracking down on violent riots across the country, promising to end the "lawlessness" across his country.

President Trump is urging every Governor to deploy their state's National Guard in sufficient numbers to be able to dominate the streets.

Today in the Rose Garden at the White House, demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd at the hands of police were pushed back by tear gas and rubber bullets just as Trump was about to speak.

Meanwhile, an Australian journalist covering riots in the US Capital has been caught up in a violent clash between protestors and police.

The US is heading into a seventh night of protests, following the police killing of George Floyd.

7 News reporter Amelia Brace told Heather du Plessis-Allan she was waiting for President Trump to speak, when police started charging at protestors.

"I copped a baton to the back, a cameraman got punched right in the stomach.

"It was really quite violent and to me certainly seemed necessary."
