An Auckland supermarket could face more than a million dollars in fines after being charged on 12 counts by the Commerce Commission under the fair trading act.

The Commission alleges six times last year, Pak'nSave Mangere charged more at the checkout for one or more items, than the displayed or advertised promotional price.

University of Auckland associate professor Alex Sims says technically for each charge they could be fined $600,000, but that's never going to happen.

"We've quite regularly seen fines over a million dollars for misleading practices. I just think this is really serious."
