Even before the trans-tasman travel bubble popped, things weren't looking rosy in the tourism sector.
New figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) show 11% of tourism accommodation was either closed or had no guests last month.
Occupancy across the past year was down to 42%, showing that domestic tourism just can't fill the gap left by international visitors.
