Tim Dower: Why are we being threatened with another lockdown?

Have we stamped out COVID community transmission in this country, or have we not?

Seems the Response Minister is either not confident that we have, or he doesn't want to tell us what his worst fear is.

Why else would Chris Hipkins launch a nationwide advertising campaign to keep COVID-19 at bay and make sure we have an unstoppable summer.

Aren't we telling the rest of the world we've got this, the only cases are trickle coming in, and we're catching those at the border?

And of course, our border controls are world class, world leading, aren't they?

I'll come back to that.

Cos Hipkins went on and on, spoiling everyone's day at the cricket with his patronising pitch.

And then he says we've seen what happened in the northern summer, and in the USA over Thanksgiving.

People travelled without precautions, driving a huge spike in cases.

Yeah, they did.

But in both those examples...the UK and the US...the virus was already all over the place, running rampant, long before people started moving around.

Hipkins and his crowd have had us believe that we've cracked COVID by making huge ongoing sacrifices, and especially keeping the border closed.

Now, he's essentially threatening another lockdown if we see new cases popping up in the community.

Which brings us back to the border and that's what this is really all about.

Hipkins knows he can't trust the border control not to stuff it up again.

And he proved that, by repeating the laughable claim that the August cluster...quote...popped up out of nowhere.

BS Minister, and you know it.

One person is telling the truth...Professor Michael Baker...on the risks around border workers getting out into the country.

Errors, breaches, cock-ups...that's what'll stop summer.
