Tim Dower: There is no excuse to be unvaccinated

It's becoming ever more clear now that the measles outbreak is so much worse than it need have been.

To hear that two women have lost their babies, most likely as a consequence of them catching measles, is tragic.

And maybe it'll be enough to convince the few who've resisted vaccination to get on the bloody bus and get it done.

There's some interesting stuff on why people don't vaccinate from the World Health Organisation.

It says that 'vaccine hesitancy' there's a nice PC phrase for you is one of the top 10 global health threats.

Vaccine hesitancy.

And it says there are four main reasons for it.

They are religion, personal beliefs, safety worries and a desire for more information.

When you burrow down a bit deeper though, not one of those really stacks up as a solid reason not to vaccinate.

  1. Religious objection, which basically boils down to ignorance
  2. Personal belief, well apparently some people say it's actually good for their kids to get some illnesses.  I actually get that argument but for measles - come on - don't you know how dangerous measles is?  Ignorance again.
  3. Safety, vaccines are safe.  Most of the anti-vax propaganda is fake news.  Totally made up and proven to be.  Yep, ignorance.
  4. Education. This has to be the least valid of the lot. There's a swag of information out there. You don't even need to get off the couch to find it.  Don't be ignorant.

You know, 10 years ago, measles was pretty much wiped out almost gone thanks to widespread vaccination and the herd immunity that comes from it.

Now, we've got a warning for people not to go to parts of Auckland unless they're vaccinated.

It's like the Congo for God's sake.

Immunisation saves lives.

Vaccinations are safe.

People who don't get their kids immunised are ignorant.

End of story.
