Tim Dower: People are losing patience with Spark Sport

We've had a note from Spark Sport, following the Australia versus Wales match at the Rugby World Cup.

They say the streaming platform performed well and audiences peaked at 115,000, the second biggest number since the All Blacks against the Springboks.

As far as the business of the Welsh audio feed booming in over the top of Scotty Stevenson at the start, Spark says that was a production issue.

And I'm willing to buy that.

I've been wondering if we're all being a bit hard on Spark Sport and there's a bit of 'kick the man when he's down' going on here or a bit of eye gouging in the ruck.

It has to be said that any slight glitch with the service attracts a lot of attention.

And I wonder what it was like when Sky first came on the scene, were there stuff-ups? Probably.

And were there decent explanations? Probably.

And remember what happened even once Sky had their act totally slick and smooth but we got a big storm?

Rain fade, atmospheric conditions have temporarily interrupted your picture, blah blah blah.

Word around the traps is that Spark will have splashed out on $12 or 13 million on the rights for the Rugby World Cup.

And if these issues aren't ironed out quickly, there'll be a lot more refunds and a lot more of that feed going free-to-air.

Tonight’s match is Scotland against Samoa and it's on really late, so even if it is a mess it probably won't matter too much.

But the feeling you get from the feedback is that people are losing patience.

Bottom line is they just have to get it right.
