Tim Dower: It's wrong for Ardern to spend $80k on flight to Nauru

It is wrong to spend $80,000, on travel for one person to go to the Pacific Forum in Nauru.

Plain wrong. Even when that one person is the Prime Minister.

I'm sure all the other options have been looked at, I personally don't use private charters so I've no idea what they cost, but I can't imagine a Lear jet or whatever would be $80,000.

However, it seems the only way to get Jacinda Ardern up to Nauru for the final session and the buffet dinner, is the Air Force 757.

And at $7000 an hour to run, the cost comes to about $80,000.

The other option would be for the PM not to go, and of course if that were the case and the reason for not going was essentially the fact she has to feed baby Neve, there'd be howls of complaint about that.

But there is no need for Ms Ardern to go.

The Pacific is Winston Peters' turf.

He knows his way around there, he knows the people, and as Foreign Minister, he's the man who's actually got a bit of clout in the region.

If anything, you could say sending the PM too almost undermines Mr Peters.

Peters has taken the lead on the Pacific reset, he pushed for the big boost to aid for the region and don't forget he was one of the first to notice what China's been up to in the region.

He's also the Deputy Prime Minister.

Australia's new PM isn't going if in fact he still is PM.

I agree it's important that New Zealand there, and that we keep a close eye on what China's doing in the Pacific.

We need to work on maintaining the long-standing relationships we have in the region.

But when we can't reach out to help a sick New Zealand woman who's stranded in Bali, it's not on to be using up this kind of money on one trip.

You have to ask as well, what next?

Is the stress of being a new Mum and Prime Minister starting to show?
