Something came to my mind yesterday as I was re-watching one of those brilliant Nigel Latta documentaries.

You might have seen The Curious Mind when it was on air, it's still available on TVNZ on demand.

As usual, Latta's work is of exceptional quality, and his skill is in taking quite complex ideas and unravelling them, then presenting them in a way anyone can understand.

The last show in the series had an excellent sequence at the end. It was about gratitude.

He took four or five regular New Zealanders, and got them to write in a journal about the person they were most grateful for in their lives.

It really was brilliant TV.

He made a simple point, and did it in a way that makes me a little emotional.

I don't want to sound like a priest here, but I can tell you I've learned the power of taking a few minutes each day to think what I'm grateful for.

And you know what, I'm the happiest I've ever been.

So I hope the suggestion is useful to you.

Maybe try it over Christmas when you have the chance to say thank you to people anyway, and see family and friends you might not have seen for ages.

Thank you for your patience and your indulgence.

Here endeth the sermon.
